On occasion of the Global IoT Day, on 9. April 2026, SECASSURED participated in the webinar and roundtable “Policy & Certification for a Trusted IoT Ecosystem in the EU“.

During the roundtable discussion, participants expressed differing perspectives on the relative roles of regulation and technology in enhancing cybersecurity. Some believe that regulation establishes baseline standards, while technology and human factors serve as the primary drivers of improvement. Others feel that regulatory frameworks struggle to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.

Concerns were raised regarding the reliability and ongoing maintenance of Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs). While SBOMs are seen as beneficial, participants questioned the reliability of vendor self-declared SBOMs.

The importance of accelerating collaboration among regulators, industry stakeholders, and the research community was emphasized to keep up with the rapid evolution of technologies such as AI and cloud computing.

Participants suggested that developing sovereign software and services, as well as focusing on principles and processes over rigid, prescriptive measures, could strengthen cybersecurity in Europe.

The overall agreement is that a balanced approach combining regulatory frameworks with advanced technological solutions is essential to meaningfully improve cybersecurity; however, the speed of implementation remains a critical challenge.
