Introduction
The Horizon Europe Innovation Action Project SECASSURED – Security Assurance-driven AI-based Security Services for Trustworthy Security Engineering from Left-to-Right develops AI-based tools for assurance-driven security engineering.
The 19 member SECASSURED consortium of industrial actors, research institutes and academia from 10 European countries encompasses the complete value chain of security engineering in the computing continuum, from server/device/hardware solution providers, infrastructure operators, platform developers, with security engineers, and software practitioners, consultants, and AI solution providers.
The project establishes a holistic assurance-driven digital twins-based framework which is capable of:
- enhancing security across software, hardware, and supply chains: SECASSURED will identify cybersecurity and regulatory risks while seamlessly integrating third-party components, including both commercial and open-source software;
- providing scalable virtual environments for more automated security assessment: The project will enable scalable virtual environments to automate the security assessment of diverse system components, including AI modules, and ensure their secure integration;
- continuous assurance-driven security engineering: SECASSURED will deliver AI-enabled security services to support continuous, assurance-driven security engineering across the entire system lifecycle.
This initiative sets the foundation for secure, continuous integration of third-party components, including AI modules, across the computing continuum, aligning with the European Commission’s evolving security and privacy regulations and the vision for human-centred and trustworthy AI.
The results will be validated across five vertical use cases, demonstrating assurance-driven security engineering for
(1) telecommunications and tech services,
(2) aeronautical industry machine digitalization,
(3) renewable energy prosumers,
(4) e-health systems, and
(5) smart charging stations for electric vehicles.
The research agenda will yield 9 innovative AI-driven security services on top of a novel, holistic security assurance model and two, federated digital twins, enhancing the security of digital infrastructures, systems, and processes through assurance-focused engineering practices.
The SECASSURED security services catalogue embodies an innovative approach to assurance-driven security engineering, supporting SecDevOps across the IoT-edge-cloud continuum. This catalogue empowers diverse stakeholders within the software supply chain and throughout software/systems lifecycle—from development to operation of critical systems—with dependable AI-based security services, enabling comprehensive, continuous security assurance. The concept directly aligns with the European Commissions strategy to make AI human-centric and trustworthy.
SECASSURED services

Impact
SECASSURED delivers measurable impact across the full digital supply chain by enabling continuous, AI-assisted security assurance, compliance, and resilience throughout system development and operation.
IT device manufacturers
SECASSURED supports device manufacturers in designing hardware with built-in security and compliance from early development stages. By enabling continuous vulnerability assessment and validation across the life cycle, SECASSURED reduces risks associated with insecure components and facilitates alignment with relevant security regulations and standards.
Software vendors (including AI vendors)
SECASSURED helps software and AI vendors improve the security, robustness, and compliance of applications and AI/ML models. Through automated assurance, vulnerability detection, and AI-specific security assessment, vendors can reduce development risks, address non-compliance earlier, and increase trust in their software products.
System integrators
SECASSURED enables system integrators to securely assemble complex systems composed of heterogeneous hardware and software components. By providing system-level security modelling, threat simulation, and continuous assurance, SECASSURED supports regulatory compliance and reduces integration-related security risks.
Service and platform operators (including IoT service operators)
SECASSURED enhances the ability of service and platform operators to manage secure and compliant systems at runtime. Through security-aware Digital Twins, anomaly detection, and automated response mechanisms, operators gain improved situational awareness, resilience, and protection of user data across large-scale IoT and digital service ecosystems.
Security service providers
SECASSURED strengthens security service providers by augmenting expert-driven security engineering with AI-based analysis, simulation, and monitoring. This enables more efficient identification, assessment, and mitigation of threats, supporting proactive and continuous security operations aligned with regulatory requirements.
Complince service providers
SECASSURED reduces the effort and time required for compliance assessment by automating the interpretation of standards, creation of assurance cases, and detection of non-compliance. This supports continuous compliance monitoring and improves traceability between requirements, evidence, and system behaviour.
End users
SECASSURED increases trust for end users by ensuring that products and services are thoroughly assessed for security, privacy, and resilience. Continuous assurance and testing reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities and contribute to safer, more reliable digital services.
Certification authorities
SECASSURED provides a foundation for more efficient and evidence-based certification processes. By generating structured, continuous assurance evidence across the system life cycle, SECASSURED supports certification authorities in evaluating compliance with security standards and regulatory frameworks.

Horizon Europe
Horizon Europe is the 9th framework programme of the European Union (EU) and is its main funding tool for research and innovation with a budget of 95.5€ billion spanning from 2021 to 2027. Through financing research and innovation projects, Horizon Europe tackles climate change, helps to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth.
The budget is divided amongst three main pillars that will support all the areas of research and innovation: excellent science, global challenges and industrial competitiveness, innovative Europe, and widening participation and strengthening the European Research Area.
Managed and implemented by the European Commission, the programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting, and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It supports the creation and better diffusion of excellent knowledge and technologies.
It creates jobs, fully engages the EU’s talent pool, boosts economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness, and optimizes investment impact within a strengthened European Research Area.
